40 Cal. This is a Numrich Arms Swivel Breech rifle in .45. Build by Hopkins and Allen in early 70s. I bought this rifle for a much grander project. I was planning to make wooden side panels for barrels and reset ramrod pipes. Stock had damage to toe, that I repaired, as well as a cracked buttplate. Had to take a much larger one and refit it.. The synthetic powders energy level per cubic inch is the same as black powder so use the volume measure for all of them. A .45 caliber rifle will use a .440 diameter ball patched with a patch that may be from .010 to .020 thick. Most people find that a .015-=.018 patch works best. Russ Hamm (in Indiana) made flint and percussion locks (no longer in production) patterned after Ashmore and marked "Ashmore Warranted" in two lines. I had a right hand flint lock and it was excellent quality. I believe Mr. Hamm stamped the insides of the lockplates with his name, but do not recall for certain.Hi Jim, My first muzzle loader was a TC.45 seneca. Our club held shoots monthly in the summer and I practiced every Saturday. My gun liked 70 grs.3f goex,.440 rb,.015 pillow ticking,and crisco for lube.It shot 1-1/4" groups @ 100 yds. from sand bag rest. Hunting load was 90 grs.goex w/Lee minie bullet.In the next few days I'll be out at the board. Going to test 80 grain 2f, 2 over powder cards, 1 & 1/4 oz 5 shot, lubed fiber wad. I personally know of serial numbers as low as less than 200 (00001XX), and almost as high as 44,000 (00439XX). That's a lot of rifles (or at least barrels) for a young ...So here goes---Hawkens 45 and 50 are 15/16. Hawkens 54 and larger 1 inch. Seneca 36 and 45 are 13/16. Renegades are 1 inch. But here is the real difference between the Hawken and the Seneca, the Seneca is a completely scaled down version of the Hawken. It looks tiny compared to a Hawken.Mar 10, 2008. #4. When I was a kid, we didn't have fancy pre-made wads. We used pieces of old wasp nest (very good), news paper and even cotton balls. Measuring by weight is more precise, but bringing a powder scale to the range os a pain, and bringing one hunting seems ridiculous. While a gram of water will weigh a gram on a scale,,,, black powder is not the same.Over time, esp. with heavy use, the brass will kind of "stretch" a bit, loosen up somewhat. The steel costs a bit more, but will last forever if cared for. I saw a brass 1851 in .44 cal. recently (the originals didn't come in .44!) and it looks great. I am looking at the ones by Ox-Yoke and seem to be reasonably priced at $9.99/100 from TOTW. Not the "Wonder Lube Wads" -- the Seals.I built and shot a Deerhunter percussion gun and found it to be very accurate and a delight to carry for an old guy. that rifle has moved on to a grandson and he has always placed in the top 3 and often #1 when shooting it in competitions. If the sights are dove tailed (as were mine), that would be an easy fix..
